Heroines of History: Esclarmonde of Foix
Tuesday, March 16 at 12 Noon

A French noblewoman who in her widowhood became a humanitarian, champion of women's education and the spiritual leader of the Cathars. Her triumphant performance at a public debate with Dominic de Guzman is part of the backstory for the tragedy of the Albigensian Crusade. She is beloved throughout the Languedoc and Pyrenees as  one of the strongest symbols of woman’s  religious freedom”and her courage and grace has won her centuries of admirers. Esclarmonde may have even been the inspiration for the character of the Grail Maiden in Wolfram von Eschenbach's classical story of Parsifal and the Holy Grail.
